Ever imagined being shamed as a guest at a wedding?
Well, that’s probably how Judy Wakhungu’s mother felt when she was arrested in an embarrassing manner yesterday, August 17, at a wedding ceremony in Westlands, Nairobi.
The mother of the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Grace Sarapay Wakhungu’s celebrations were cut short by arresting officers.
She was apprehended after a Nairobi court issued an arrest warrant for her over an alleged unpaid bank loan.
The mother to the CS was forced to appear before a court in Milimani, Nairobi over a case filed against her in 2014.
She is said to have borrowed a loan worth Ksh 1o million from Middle East Bank with the proposed payment completion being that same year but has since failed to pay.
The financial institution went ahead to sue her when the alleged debt was not cleared and after formal demand was duly made.
According to court documents of the case presided over by Deputy Registrar Nancy Makau, Grace Wakhungu had promised in 2014 to pay Middle East bank the said amount after admitting her indebtedness to the bank.
In spite of this, she has still been unable to honor or perform her obligations and in particular, failed to make the promised payments for the financial facilities she received together with all other charges payable to the bank.
The court gave Ms Wakhungu one week to settle her debt or be committed to a civil jail. The Registrar then released the Minister’s mother on a KSh 1 Million security bond, which she reportedly could not raise therefore spending the night at the Langata Women’s Prison.
The case is set to be heard again on August 24.
