Three people are facing police interrogation for the killing of a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier in Ahero, Kisumu County.
The ex-KDF soldier had gone out on Saturday night with the Area Chief to have a drink at a bar in Ahero. On Sunday, he was found dead, lying close to the club.
Reports show that a fight broke out at the club at around 10pm the night he died. The fight erupted as the soldier became somewhat drunk and began acting a little silly, witnesses say.
Feeling disturbed, the bartenders tried to walk him out to make other customer enjoy their night. However, the soldier resisted and was kicked, beaten and thrown out of the bar.
Bruised and wounded, he lay unresponsive, but lost his fight to survive when nobody helped him out. It is not clear if the club officials did the beating or if it was customers. It is also not clear the number of people involved in the fight.
The family members of the former KDF soldier are now outraged at the level of inhumanity meted to the man.
The wife of the slain soldier, Lilian Atieno, allege that her husband was kicked out of the joint and beaten for spilling alcohol on the table. While addressing KTN, Atieno said:
“My husband was drinking alcohol before he spilled it on the table…he was thrown out and then came back and sat on the chair which suddenly broke…he was thrown out again and after that only the chief can tell us what transpired.”
The Chief and two bartenders were arrested and detained to help police in probing what exactly happened on the fateful night.
As his family plans his funeral, they hope that the people involved get punished.
