Congolese musician Olomide Koffi has been deported from Kenya following the Friday evening’s incident at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Koffi was bundled by the police before being flown back to Kinshasa using a Kenya Airways flight at 12 noon.
Three dancers and his lead singer Cindy Lokole joined the musician while the rest of the crew departed later in the evening.
Due to the Saturday deportation, the singer famously called Le Grand Mopao or Mopao Mokonzi was unable to perform at his concert in Nairobi.
He was in the country to perform at a concert courtesy of Nsanna Promotions that was scheduled for yesterday.
Kenya’s Minister of Youth and Gender, Sicily Kariuki, said the singer’s conduct was an “insult to Kenyans and our constitution”.
In a display of support for gender equality, Zambia has also cancelled a performance by Koffi Olomide after he was deported from Kenya for allegedly kicking one of his dancers.
The 60-year-old singer was due to perform at an event organised by the Agricultural and Commercial Show Society in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, this week.
The event organisers said they had called off the rumba star’s appearance because of the “reported sad incident” in Kenya.
Olomide was caught on camera on Friday at Kenya’s main international airport apparently kicking one of the female dancers but, speaking in an interview, he denied kicking anyone and said he had tried to “stop” a “girl who wanted to fight the dancers I came with”.
“I love women and I would never assault them. What you saw back at JKIA was nothing but a camera trick. I strongly believe there are a section of people who want to tarnish my name through bad press.”
Meanwhile, people who had purchased tickets to watch Koffi perform in Kenya are now requesting for refund of their money.
Reports say a number of advance tickets going for Sh2,500 and Sh4,000 for VIP seats since April 23, had been sold out. Promoters are now left to bear the consequences of the unexpected incident.
The show was booked in at a posh five-star-hotel where they were to spend a few nights.
