United States holds a celebration known as Immigrant Heritage Month every month of June. And in 2016 Immigrant Heritage Month celebration – which is the third annual celebration – many legendary faces came together to join a non-profit organization named welcome.us, in sending the right message to the world about immigrants.
The ‘I Am An Immigrant’ campaign was majorly thronged with notable celebrities who were immigrants themselves. The first video to boost the campaign was posted on June 1.
The video boasted renowned faces, like award-winning Lupita Nyong’o, Akon, Kerry Washington, Julianne Moore, Tracee Ellis Ross, Alan Cumming, Rosario Dawson, Bobby Cannavale, Tom Colicchio, Miguel, Rosie Perez, Junot Diaz, Roselyn Sanchez and Guillermo Diaz.
In the video, the stars reminded the world that almost all Americans descended from immigrants by giving a slight personal hint of their own immigration experience.
The celebrities all wore a t-shirt decorated with the phrase “I am an immigrant” to help show their support.
According to the show’s official twitter update, the ‘I Am An Immigrant’ campaign seeks to “encourage all of us to explore our individual heritage and recognize our distinct and shared experiences,” and recognizes that “we all have our piece in the American story, whether as a new immigrant, native to this land, a descendant of slavery or those who came to our nation seeking a better life.
Welcome.us is also encouraging others to share their immigrant stories through the site and on social media using the hashtags #ImmigrantHeritageMonth and #IHM2016. This campaign is coming at a time when the attitude towards immigrants is more negative than positive.
Donald Trump, a United States presidential aspirant, has also made remarks concerning immigrants that are short of xenophobic and racist.
“As has been stated continuously in the press, people are pouring across our borders unabated. Public reports routinely state great amounts of crime are being committed by illegal immigrants. This must be stopped and it must be stopped now,” he said.
Donald Trump added that America will only open its borders to legal immigrants if elected as president. This sentiment towards immigrants is one that is not only common in the United States but other parts of the world.
