Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is the cover star of Vogue magazine’s October issue.
The actress invited the magazine to her rural home in Kisumu for the glamorous shoot which featured her grandmother.
The beautiful scenery of her village provided stunning backdrops to the photos as she discussed her humble beginnings, challenges and ambitions.
Miss Nyong’o is no doubt a good ambassador for her country as the shoot will increase it popularity.
Lupita rose to fame in 2014 thanks to her role in 12 Years a Slave. She has become a fashion icon who aims to create opportunities for people of color.
The cover story coincides with the release of the much anticipated Queen of Katwe movie. The movie tells the story of a young Ugandan girl who grew up in the Katwe slums. She dropped out of school but started playing chess at the young age of nine, becoming a grand master.
Lupita plays the girls mother and also features British-born Nigerian actor David Oyelowo.
She told Vogue:
“To play a mother of four in Uganda, a formidable mother who has so much working against her, was so compelling to me. It was not something i thought i’d be asked to do.”
“The fact that it was based on a true story, an uplifting story out of Africa.. all my dreams were coming truein that script.”
The 33 year old also talked about her inability to make ugali and how ashamed she felt after she admitted it on television. She was filmed making the dish under instruction from her mother, Dorothy Nyong’o.
”This is like an abdominal workout, it is no joke,” Lupita blurted out as she stirred the pot.
Miss Nyong’o is no doubt a good ambassador for her country as the shoot will help Kenya’s tourism industry. The magazine would provide a different platform to show the world the beauty of the country.
