Meru MPs Blast Munya For Misusing County Funds


Members of Parliament from Meru County are accusing Governor Peter Munya of misusing county funds. saying that some of the costs of county projects are inflated.

The MPs are saying the governor inflates the costs of some of the county’s projects to turn a profit.

Imenti North MP Rahim Dawood and Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi claimed that the Meru Hotel renovation, which was billed at Ksh 200 million, was exorbitant.

Speaking at Makutano in Imenti North Sub County, Rahim Dawood said:

”Ksh 200 million is too much. Munya should tell us who was given the contract to build the hotel. Including the Kinoru stadium that they claim will be one of the best stadiums in East and Central Africa.

“The stadium does not even look like a stadium but they say they want more money.”

The two MPs also faulted the Governor Munya for failing to report on the use of moneys meant for the construction of Kinoru Stadium. They further complained that it has taken too long to complete the project.

The two parliamentarians went as far as saying that the governor should be impeached because he had failed to serve his county.

Governor Munya is meanwhile facing a senate committee to explain how 5.2 billion shillings was spent by Meru County in the 2013 – 2014 financial year.

During the session, the governor exchanged words with Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi which stopped proceedings.

Senator Wamatangi called Munya out for refusing to honor previous Senate summons to respond to audit queries. It took committee chair, Anyang Nyongo’s intervention to calm the two parties.

Governor Munya however faulted the Kiambu Senator for using Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee to address political issues meant for outside of the committee.
