Following the arrest of ODM’s Director of Communications Philip Etale, early Monday in Malindi, Raila Odinga has accused jubilee of engaging in the campaign of intimidation.
He describes the suspicious detention by Jubilee as a quest to pressurize CORD into bowing down for the ruling party.
The Cord leader says Jubilee is resorting to “arbitrary detentions” where in there is no likelihood or evidence that they committed a crime against legal statute, or in which there has been proper due process of law
He cited the arrest of ODM communication director at his hotel room in Malindi on Monday and detention at the Kilifi police station over claims of electoral malpractice.
Raila cautions that:
We wish to put on notice the government officers behind this campaign of harassment and intimidation being meted out on ODM supporters and officials.
There will be a time for each of them to carry their crosses and answer for their crimes.
ODM leader urged the locals to conquer the evil leadership by destroying Jubilee candidate Philip Charo recent political ambition.
Raila tells his supporters that Jubilee will be put to shame if only the residents mass vote for Willy Mtengo, who is ODM candidate in the election.
Raila released this statement from Israel on Monday as he went on an official trip he began on Saturday.
The opposition leader also hinted that his party has tasked Senators James Orengo (Siaya) and Johnstone Muthama (Machakos) to the ODM director’s case.
Regional police commander Francis Wanjohi said without specifying the reason for the arrest:
We are still interrogating the suspect.
Raila assigned all Cord MPs and other elected leaders who are in charge of the party’s Malindi by-election to mount opposition’s supervisors to keep an eye to the electoral process until the election is over.
He also told them to report any misconduct during the election while making sure there are no diversions and unnecessary delays.
Idris Abdirahman, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s director of political affairs, added that the arbitrary detention shows that the ruling party, Jubilee has sensed it will be defeated.
Philip Etale’s hotel was raided this morning by nearly 20 officers, who arrested Etale at around 1am.
He was detained for several hours at Kilifi police station. While in custody, Etale via social media denied any planned rigging.
Police say he was trying to gain illegal access to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission system records online.
They also said that his mobile phone and laptop were demanded during the arrest as a tip-off shows he was planning to hack IEBC records
Police who raid the suspect’s hotel revealed that regional coordinator Nelson Marwa is the one who ordered the arrest.
The officers said Marwa had complained he had information of the said hacking and had even protested to Nairobi. The party has nonetheless lashed out at the arrest, describing it as fake and part of state’s plan to mount fear in their supporters in Malindi.
