Trouble looms for top leaders over who to obtain CORD ticket with the rate at which the coalition has been breaking into units unconsciously. This is of course endangering the party’s chances to win in next year’s election.
All four top people in the party including Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula are yet possible candidates who would become the CORD flag bearer in 2017.
And except they are united in 2017, Jubilee is likely to win again with a wide margin.
Highly interested in CORD ticket, Wiper leaders publicly said they would defect CORD if Kalonzo is denied the presidential ticket.
According to Makueni Governor, Kivutha Kibwana statement last week, “there is a pact you made with Raila. At one time you said Raila Tosha. We are hoping that Raila would say Kalonzo and Wetang’ula tosha.”
Kalonzo’s supporters cited a pre-election deal in which the Wiper party leader reportedly decided to endorse Kalonzo as Raila’s 2013 running mate on the basis that Raila would be the runner of the 2017 candidate for CORD.
However, Mbooni Mp was quoted as saying they would abandon the deal as they now want Kalonzo to be among the presidential candidates and not a running mate.
Meanwhile, ODM, Wiper and Ford Kenya have approved of their three principals to contest for the CORD presidential ticket.
The problem is now to agree mutually and pick somebody highly loved by the voters who would be the flagbearer for the coalition.
Therefore, in a bid to ensure that the generally most-liked person is thrown up against president Uhuru, CORD resolved to employ a foreign expert to carry out a survey on the three co-principals to determine the likeliest winning candidate to represent the party.
ODM and Ford Kenya was said to be in support of the idea. However Wiper dismissed it, suggesting that a 2013 pre-election memorandum of understanding declares Kalonzo the presidential candidate for 2017 election.
Though, there is no foreign expert yet to sort this out, Kalonzo is said to be insistent concerning the race.
Meanwhile the ruling party, Jubilee regards Raila as the only the person who can threaten president Uhuru’s chances of climbing the seat next year.
They believe Kalonzo and Wetang’ula are not really a threat to reaching their dreams next year. Kakamega senator Boni Khwalwale, a supporter of Wetang’ula, lashed out at this notion and said all CORD principals have equal chances and no one should seen as special and more of a threat than the rest.
Analysts advised that the way CORD picks its 2017 candidate holds the key to the coalition’s future.
This has raised concerns and tension between ODM, Wiper and Ford Kenya even though they act united in public while chasing parallel presidential ambitions.
Though Raila is regarded as a threat, some members insist nobody is yet the flagbeaer yet. But the three have started different activities to strengthen their strongholds and improve their bid to clinch power within the coalition.
Raila, the ODM leader, has maintained his plan for a fourth stab at the Presidency in 2017. Kalonzo, the Wiper Party leader, has restore his political activities by meeting the grassroots leaders to rejuvenate the party ahead of 2017.
Wetang’ula’s search to lead Kenya has caused slight disagreement among ODM-allied leaders who in their minds know that Raila is the coalition’s unavoidable flagbearer.
It was also alleged that Wetang’ula wants to contest for the prsidency in favour of Raila Last Sunday, nonetheless, ODM deputy party leader and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya denied that Wetang’ula is searching for the CORD ticket to open more opportunity to Raila.
CORD is yet to pick a suitable candidate to challenge Jubilee’s president Uhuru.
