Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has been named the English Premier League’s best African player for January.

The Tottenham midfielder was named the winner on Wednesday by the organizers of the award, New African Soccer. He beat Chelsea’s Nigerian winger Victor Moses and Manchester City’s Ivorian star, Yaya Toure.

Big Vic, as he is fondly called by his team-mates, has played a key role for Tottenham throughout this season, being one of the first names on the starting sheet.

He featured in all the four matches played in January and was instrumental in their 2-0 win against Chelsea, 4-0 thumping of West Bromwich Albion, 2-2 draw against Manchester City and the barren draw against Sunderland.

His efforts during that time has helped guide Spurs to third place on the league standings as they continue to push for their maiden Premier League title.

Spurs have also remained the side with the least losses in England’s top-flight league this campaign. They also have the best defensive record so far.

Victor Wanyama’s efforts on the pitch have unfortunately led to a decline in personal style as he was dubbed one of the worst dressers along with Eric Dier by defender Danny Rose.

The England international full-back said on Soccer AM when asked about Tottenham’s worst fashion offenders that the pair were the worst among all players with Dier having a preference for baggy jeans and Wanyama looking like he gets tips from former soap opera stars.

“He (Dier) comes in in the baggiest gear you could ever imagine – he’s probably top of the list. Victor Wanyama is a close second – he came in a fur hoodie the other day. It looked like he’d stolen something from Pat Butcher out of Eastenders.”

Tottenham will be looking to continue their decent run into the month of February with Victor Wanyama continuing to display such performances that got him this recognition.

He will, however, be up against African Cup of Nations returnees such as Liverpool’s Senegalese forward, Sadio Mane who has banged in a few goals this month.
