A court in the US state of Iowa has sent shivers down the spine of parents and the concerned public after a white man was given no jail time after he live streamed himself raping a toddler.
The white man identified as Kraigen Grooms sexually assaulted a 2-year-old girl in April of 2013 as another man watched and recorded it.
The authorities had a hard time identifying and locating the 19-year-old. Almost a year later, investigators arrested Grooms in March 2014.
He was charged with second-degree sexual abuse which is a class B felony with a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. He pled guilty to one count of engaging in an immoral act with a child.
The presiding judge, Judge Myron Gookin opted not to give Grooms prison time. But required him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Grooms will only receive five years of supervised release with a potential 10 year suspended sentence if he breaks parole.
Authorities made a point to report that Grooms had undergone two mental health evaluations during his years in custody to find out mental disabilities. Investigators also provided proof that the assault was premeditated and that he planned to attack another 3-year-old before apprehension.
The judge’s decision has sparked outrage in a society now embroiled in a tense debate about racism. It gives credence to the argument that there is a system of white supremacy where white people will always get systematic advantages over other races.
A petition to fire Judge Myron Gookin is making rounds as the public calls for a retrial for the ”toddler rapist.”
Kraigen Grooms case is just the most recent story of a white man who pleads guilty to rape being treated leniently by the law.
