100 Schools That Have Seen Fire Crisis This Year

Education Minister Fred Matiangi has suggested that students are resorting to arson attacks after the government foiled their plans of cheating on exams.

Some students have been arrested and charged for the rising arson attacks. Police said some students were protesting because they had paid for the papers but they have not received them.

However, the main reason behind the rising fire crises in schools is yet to be established.

Knut secretary general Wilson Sossion said he had cautioned against the radical reforms. He told Matiang’i  never to think teachers are behind the fire crisis.

He added that Education CS Fred Matiang’i challenged the warning, saying it led to another strike.

So far, property worth millions of shillings have been destroyed. As a consequence many schools have closed down with a handful of administrators still open.

Arson attacks in Kenyan schools

Sossion has urged Jubilee to do something as soon as possible before it gets to “ugly confrontations and repercussions”.

Matiang’i told the Education committee that fires have been reported at 317 schools since 2007 and 98 in 2015.

More than 100 government secondary schools in Kenya have been set on fire just this year.

Last week, a student said he and his schoolmates deliberately set their dormitory alight to ease the stress of handling their workload.

They also claimed to have done it to buy some time off school if they burnt down some buildings. Five dormitories were set alight overnight.

St. Patrick’s High School in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet county and a dormitory at Merti Muslim Secondary School were among the latest schools that saw arson attacks.
