Antonio Conte Becomes The Fourth Manager To Lift The Premier League Trophy At First Try

Antonio Conte has guided Chelsea to a second Premier League title in three years in his first season coaching in England.

The Italian manager has become only the fourth manager in Premier League history to achieve such a feat behind Jose Mourinho (2004/05), Carlo Ancelotti (2009/10) and Manuel Pellegrini (2013/14).

“For me to win in my first season in England, I am really proud of the achievement,” said Conte to reporters.

“My players showed me great professionalism, commitment, work-rate and will to try to win this league.”

Conte arrived Chelsea last summer after leaving Italy at the end of Euro 2016. He inherited a messy and exhausted squad which made the worst title defense in 25 years following the sack of Mourinho who fell out with his players. The enigmatic manager went on to revitalize the same set of players to create a fresh champion team.

“When you arrive after a bad season and the team has arrived at 10th in the league it means there are a lot of problems.”

“To find the right solution quickly isn’t easy and for this, I want to thank my players because they trusted in the new work, my philosophy, video analysis to see mistakes and they showed the right attitude and behavior.”

The Blues confirmed the title would be heading to Stamford Bridge by beating West Brom on Friday night at the Hawthorns. A late goal from out of favor striker Michy Batshuayi sent the whole Chelsea staff and fans into extasy.

Chelsea now have 87 points on the table with two games to go with closest contenders, Tottenham, only able to finish with 86 points if they win their three remaining fixtures.

Antonio Conte’s Tactics

The victory was Chelsea’s 25th victory in 30 league matches since Antonio Conte changed his side’s tactics in September, opting for three defenders. The tactical switch coaxed such a thrilling run from his team and benefitted bench-ridden players such as Victor Moses, who turned out to play a key part in the title surge.

Captain Gary Cahill said the players believed they could mount a title charge despite their poor showings last season because of their manager’s attitude. Fellow defender David Luiz who opted to leave PSG to return to Chelsea felt vindicated and said the chance to work with Conte and win the league was too hard to resist.

“When I decided to come back here I dreamed to win the Premier League. I am very happy because my dream came true.”

“Conte works with passion every day. He deserves it because he is working hard every day.”

The Italian tactician is looking to take Chelsea’s season from great to fantastic by winning another title on May 27, 2017. Chelsea will face their bitter London rivals Arsenal in the FA Cup final and the former Juventus boss has charged his players to go for victory against the Gunners.
