Babu Owino: I Endorse Raila For President In 2017

The SONU chairman, Babu Owino, has announced that he will support Cord leader Raila Odinga if he receives Cord presidential ticket for 2017 poll.

He also announced that he will contest for Embakasi East MP against incumbent John Ogutu. Babu Owino made this statement during a morning talk show on Ramogi FM on Friday.

Owino, whose victory as a chairperson of the SONU was challenged by rival Mike Jacobs, urged people to register in large numbers and vote for Raila in next year’s poll. The young politician revealed that he has been a fan of Raila and has tried so hard in helping to take him to the State House’s seat.

According to the man who had caused a two-day student riot for which the University of Nairobi management had to close down the institution indefinitely said:

“While at the university I will try as much as I can to contribute towards Raila winning the presidency.”

Meanwhile, Raila Odinga yesterday indicated that he does not regard himself as the automatic presidential candidate of Cord coalition. Raila’s co-principals in Cord, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula desire to emerge as the flag bearer of their party in 2017 but the Raila’s supporters consider him the obvious choice.

The supporters of these three principals have been making threats to each other, with one insisting that it will break out of ODM if its leader is denied the ticket.

The internal conflict in Cord turned visible last week when Raila skipped Wetangula’s presidential campaign launch in Kakamega. Additionally, ODM leaders dismissed an MoU that Raila signed in 2013 for Kalonzo to be the candidate in 2017 and Wetangula in 2022.

Raila seems to be a stronger possible candidate for Cord. His political strength could be proved further with his role that earned Mwai Kibaki Presidential seat in 2002 with his campaign rallying cry of ‘Kibaki Tosha’.

Even though the opinion polls says he has better chance than Kalonzo or Wetangula, strategists suggest it would be best for Cord to throw up a different candidate to contest against Jubilee instead of Raila. Hon Moses Wetangula suggested during his campaign over the weekend that Raila should play a father fighure while Kalonze becomes his (Wetangula’s) running mate.
