As we end this spectacular year at Real Madrid under coach Zidane, we want to take a quick look at the achievements of this wonderful club.
2016 already has its place in the 114 years of history of Real Madrid. Just like in 2014, the Whites won the international triple crown: Champions League, European Super Cup, and Club World Cup.
But before claiming these titles, the year began with the arrival of Zidane to the bench at Real Madrid. On 4th January, the Frenchman was presented as the new Whites’ coach and started a winning run that has made this year unforgettable.
Real Madrid Under Zinedine Zidane
Zidane had a legendary career as a player and his first steps into coaching have been unbeatable. Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane won the most points in the league, fighting for the 2015/16 title until the final game and set a new club record of consecutive victories in the competition: 16 wins in a row.
In that streak, they won 2-1 in the Camp Nou, the winning goals came from Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The biggest moment of 2016 came in the Champions League. The hero of la Novena became the coach of la Undécima. The Whites came through the knock-out stages beating Roma, Wolfsburg, and Manchester City to reach the final in Milan against Atletico Madrid.
In the San Siro, a magical night was re-lived to win the eleventh European Cup.
Victory In The Penalty Shootout
As he did in la Décima, Ramos scored again in a Champions League final to make it 1-0. After the Atletico equalizer and extra time, the match was decided from the penalty spot.
Real Madrid had a perfect shootout and Cristiano, top scorer in this year’s European Cup with 16 goals, scored the winning penalty.
The start of the 2016/17 season began with the winning of another title: the third European Super Cup. The Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim (Norway) was the scene of this event, in which Sevilla were the opponents.
Once again, Real Madrid had to fight until the end to win the trophy. Asensio marked his official debut with a great goal, but Sevilla turned the game around.
Ramos was the hero, sending the game to extra time with a goal in the 93rd minute before Carvajal got the winner in the last minute of extra time.
According to Realmadrid.com the club has been undefeated since early April, allowing them to string together 37 games without losing (club record). In addition to the titles, this great streak has seen Real Madrid end 2016 as league leaders.
In this competition, the visit to the Camp Nou on 3rd December was once again an emotional moment, thanks again to Ramos’s 90th-minute equalizer. The captain reappeared in the final minutes and rewarded Real Madrid for fighting until the final whistle.
The year culminated with winning the second Club World Cup, which saw Real Madrid become the only five-time champion of the world. The event took place in Japan with the final ending in victory over Kashima Antlers (4-2).
The Whites had to wait for extra-time again to be crowned champions with Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo getting the 4 goals. The Portuguese forward, who had received the 2016 Ballon d’Or a few days earlier, scored a hat-trick against the Japanese side and was named the player of the tournament.
With this historic triumph in Japan, Real Madrid put the finishing touches to an unforgettable year and won the honour of wearing the champions of the world badge on their shirt in 2017.
