Conseslus Kipruto: World 3,000m Steeplechase Champion Sued For Child Neglect

3,000m steeplechase champion at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, Conseslus Kipruto, has been sued for child neglect.

A 20-year-old woman claims to have cohabited with Kipruto between 2015 and 2016 when they had a boy. She says the athlete has since differed and cut all communication with her.

She went to the children’s court in Eldoret on Tuesday after she sought support from the Center for Human Rights and Democracy (CHRD) in Eldoret to file the case.

She is seeking KSh50,000 every month for upkeep.

The steeplechase world champion has been summoned to court on September 25 for the hearing.

“She came to us for assistance and we will provide the lawyer to prosecute the case for her,” said CHRD CEO Ken Wafula.

The woman, who is said to be an orphan from Mosoriot, where Kipruto has a home, in Nandi County in her affidavit said:

“We cohabited as husband and wife from May 2015 and were blessed with one child.”

“Our relationship and perceived marriage has gone sour to the extent that the defendant doesn’t contact us, and doesn’t provide for the minor, leaving me to struggle alone for the welfare of the minor.”

The complainant, who was not named, further said she is unemployed and that Conseslus Kipruto is planning to marry another woman which would put the boy’s future in jeopardy.

“He is a successful athlete of international repute with means and resources to meet the basic requirements of the minor while in my custody.”

She adds Kiputo’s attitude shows he will not support the child unless ordered by the court and that he is under obligation to undertake his parental responsibilities.

The woman wants the man compelled to pay KSh15,000 for food, KSh15,000 for rent, KSh12,000 for clothing, KSh3,000 for electricity and water and KSh5,000 for a house help and medical expenses.
