Senator Lenny Kivuti did not expect the reaction he has gotten from his constituents following his Christmas and New Year well-wishes text messages.
A section of Embu residents have blasted the senator, who is known for his flamboyance, saying he was cheap for sending text messages instead of giving gifts to mark the festivities.
Senator Lenny Kivuti was accused of playing politics with the well-wishes text messages, rather than at least looking out for the needy during the festivities.
Residents also expressed shock as to how the senator obtained their phone numbers without having ever encountered him before.
While suggesting he could have called the needy to his home for a feast, others suggested he should have sent money through Mpesa since he had constituents’ numbers.
A social media user from Embu suggested that the senator should have put the message on a billboard from which the county would have benefited.
“He would have mounted billboards with the messages since that way the county would have got revenue from him.”
One of Kivuti’s handlers, Ambrose Njeru, told reporters when questioned about the Senators motive with the text message saying it was to publicly reach out to every resident who owns a mobile phone.
“We decided to use that channel since its cheaper and more convenient compared to printing Christmas and New Year cards,” he said.
He said the senator was able to reach out to more than 100,000 voters in just a click of a button.
Some residents have also expressed their gratitude in receiving the text message. They said they had no problem with Senator Lenny Kivuti because the message reached their hearts.
