Gachagua's Burial

Former Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua’s burial has been set for Monday with his body arriving Nairobi from London in the early hours of Friday.

The body was accompanied by the late governor’s two daughters Susan and Mercy as well as the Kenyan High Commissioner to the UK and other friends.

Many dignitaries including governors and county leaders accompanied Gachagua’s widow, Margaret Karugaru to receive the body.

A mass was said at the airport before the body was taken away to a funeral home.

Gachagua's Burial

Mr. Rigathi Gachagua, the former governor’s brother, during the mass said that his family was extending an invitation to everyone to attend the funeral regardless of political leanings.

Some members of Nyeri County assembly have, however, opted to skip Gachagua’s burial citing security concerns.

Majority Leader Duncan Gituanja claimed that he and some others had received death threats about attending the funeral.

“We had planned to attend the burial but not anymore given the social media threats. We were recently told that our condolence messages were not accepted yet they were sincere.”

The Kabaru ward representative said that a section of his colleagues have been portrayed in a manner suggesting that they played a role in the governor’s death, which he vehemently said were misleading and untrue.

“The security apparatus in the county has not assured us of security. We feel that since we do not own guns we cannot afford to take that risk (to attend).”

Mr. Gituanja went on to mention that he has sent President Uhuru Kenyatta an apology confirming him and his colleagues expected absence.

Gikondi Ward Representative and chief whip James Kahiga went on to accuse the deceased’s brother of advancing his political interests through his brother’s death.

“He wants to play politics with the brother’s death and we can see a lot of malice yet the members are very willing to work with the new governor,” alleged Kahiga.

Mr. Rigathi Gachagua is said to be vying for the Mathira parliamentary seat.
