Substitute Goals Record

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has equaled former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s single Premier League club substitute goals record.

The French international achieved the feat on Sunday when he came off the bench to score an equalizer for the gunners in a 1-1 draw against Southampton.

His equalizer secured a valuable point for Arsenal which saw them overtake rivals Tottenham into fifth on the table. The goalscorer, on the other hand, found himself rubbing shoulders with an absolute legend as he continues to live up to his ever-growing super-sub reputation.

Olivier Giroud has now scored 17 league goals for Arsenal from the bench, same as the man dubbed the “baby-faced assassin”.

Despite his heroic performances off the bench this season, scoring 4 goals, the 31-year-old is yet to start a Premier League game.

This has led to increased speculation that the French man might up for a move away from the Emirates Stadium.

His manager Arsene Wenger has come out to rubbish such claims saying he is determined to hold on to the player when the transfer window opens.

“Why should we lose an important player?” he asked.

“Yes, he will start games. It’s always the same, when you have many good players, some of them cannot play,” he added.

“The question you get is always why does a guy who is good not play? Because if you take him on, you have another guy who is good who will not play. It is as simple as that.”

“He will start games because we play every three days. He is mentally very strong and we have to be grateful to a player who comes on when he is needed. It is a remarkable achievement.”

Other players to make the list are Javier Hernandez, who scored 14 goals from the bench at United, while Jermain Defoe and Edin Dzeko managed 13 goals whilst at Spurs and Manchester City respectively.

Defoe, however, leads the substitute goals record list for different clubs. The former England international has scored 23 top flight substitute goals for four different clubs.

The list also includes former Arsenal and Portsmouth striker Nwankwo Kanu with 17 goals, as well as Peter Crouch and Daniel Sturridge, both with 15 goals.
