The Githeri Man, whose real name is Martin Kamotho, is among a number of individuals to be honored with State Commendations as the country marks the 54th Jamhuri Day celebrations.
The commendation will be awarded by President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Kasarani Stadium alongside other Orders, decorations, and medals.
Mr. Kamotho caused a buzz on Social Media after he was pictured absentmindedly enjoying his maize and bean meal (Githeri) as he joined millions of Kenyans braving the cold, damp weather to cast their vote on August 8.
His photo gave rise to the very famous #GitheriMan hashtag.
Other recipients of the coveted Head of State Commendation (Civilian Division) is controversial blogger Robert Alai, musicians Ben Githae and Rufftone.
Also on the list of the recipients are Citizen TV’s senior reporter Jackie Maribe, State House Director of Digital Communications Dennis Itumbi, Deputy Director in charge of State branding and events Thomas “Big Ted” Kwaka.
State House Senior Director of Public Communication Munyori Buku and Hellen Nkaiserry, the wife of the late Cabinet minister Joseph Nkaissery will also be honored.
The State commendations – Orders, decorations, and medals – are normally given to individuals in recognition of outstanding or distinguished services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities.
The awards are made by the president upon the advice of a National Honours and Awards Committee in the president’s office. This is after individuals are nominated by district committees, government ministries, religious organizations, non-governmental organizations, and other selected bodies.
