Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump participated in the first US presidential debate on Monday where they clashed on issues concerning the economy, national security and foreign policy, among other things.
The debate, which was held at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York, started off by the two candidates exchanging pleasantries. Donald Trump addressed his rival as Secretary Clinton in the beginning before the gloves came off.
The two candidates aggressively attacked each other as they pitched their case to the millions of American voters watching.
Hillary Clinton pointed out that her rival was out of touch with reality and having a weak relationship with the truth.
Donald Trump demanded that the former secretary of state and US senator account for her time in government.
“You’ve been doing this for 30 years. Why are you just thinking about these solutions right now? For 30 years, you’ve been doing it.”
She responded by accusing Trump of having “stiffed” small businesses throughout his business career.
Donald Trump’s best moment came when the pair exchanged thoughts about America’s trade deals. Hillary mentioned her husband’s tenure in office as she commended his policies saying ”I think a lot about what worked and how we can make it work again”.

Donald Trump barged in as he did all through the debate mentioning that Bill had approved NAFTA which is attributed to why Americans lost jobs.
”He approved Nafta, which is the single worst trade deal ever approved in this country” Donald Trump said.
Hillary went on to demand explanations over Donald Trump’s tax returns.
”You’ve got to ask yourself, why won’t he release his tax returns? And I think there may be a couple of reasons. First, maybe he’s not as rich as he says he is. Second, maybe he’s not as charitable as he claims to be. Third, we don’t know all of his business dealings.”
She insinuated that Mr Trump may not have paid any income tax, hence the reason he is not releasing his tax returns. Trump followed up by offering to release his tax returns if she released her deleted emails.
Donald Trump constantly interrupted Mrs Clinton, heckled and rolled his eyes while trying to paint her as a liar and being unfit to be president.
Hillary didn’t fail to use her famous line during the debate where she talked about his temperament. She said ”a man who could be provoked with a tweet should not have his finger anywhere near the button.”
Issues of sexism and campaign shenanigans were discussed in the final round with Donald trump making it known that he chose to take the higher ground instead of mentioning Bill Clinton’s past infidelities.
Donald Trump largely evaded policy questions and was mostly incoherent throughout the debate as Mrs Clinton clearly landed the first blow of the presidential debates.
With the elections just six weeks away and the polls showing a virtual dead heat, the remaining debates will do either candidate good on their bid to get to the oval office.
