Jubilee Challenges Renaming Of Mombasa Road After Fidel Odinga , Says He Isn’t A Hero

Ali Mwatsahu, the Chairman of Mombasa County Jubilee Alliance Party, has slammed the renaming of the New Nyali Road to Fidel Odinga Street in honor of CORD leader Raila Odinga’s son, calling it a disloyalty and treachery to the history and overall people of Mombasa.

Ali opposes the plan and suggests other many notables who have reached the height of being commemorated by street names.

Ali Mwatsahu questions:

Why not name the road Mekatilili wa Menza, after the Giriama freedom fighter? Why not name it after one of our many heroes who symbolise our identity and history as Coast community?

However the Finance chairman and nominated MCA Mohamed Hatimy, argued Ali’s standpoint. According to Mr. Hatimy

What is the problem? This issue will not cost the county government a penny. I don’t see it as a big issue.

He further referenced the road in Old Town, which was not named, saying it would also be renamed Professor Ali Mazrui Road.

He explained that Governors are bestowed with the right and privilege to name and rename roads in counties.

Speaking to Nairobinews through a phone call, he said:

Naming and renaming roads is executive power at the disposal of the governor. It does not even need approval from the county assembly.

Mr Ali Mwatsahu nevertheless disclosed that Jubilee could have a peaceful demonstration to protest the move if it is implemented.

We shall not allow it. Some of those at the county government, in fact, are foreigners, having come in sailor ships and do not understand the history of Mombasa or the Coast.

He asked that Moi Avenue to Kilindini Road should be given a new name to show respect to them and said he finds it as a lack of respect to decide on renaming Ronald Ngala Street, Sheikh Ali street who in words did nothing that calls for such respect for the country. “Rashid Sajaad Road” that was named after the Kanu era businessman, Mr Rashid Sajaad wasn’t left out. The Chairman wondered why it was named after a foreigner who contributed absolutely nothing to the good of the country.

Twitter and social network users did not look away either. Many support the renaming while others criticized the action.

Recall that the road stirring up these controversies is to be launched today by Opposition Leader Raila Odinga. He had traveled to Mombasa yesterday to spearhead the renaming and launching of New Nyali Road to Fidel Odinga Street in honor of his son.
