In addition to the sweeping attack on Al Shabaab by the U.S last Saturday, which murdered 150 militants, some foreign commandos have carried a raid against the group which hits it big once again, with 15 casualties recorded as of yet.
According to a Somali government official, Mohamed Aweys, 15 Al-Shabaab fighters were murdered in the attack carried out by unnamed foreign commandos on their base in the town of Awdhegle – some 50km (30 miles) west of the capital Mogadishu.
The raid was allegedly carried out by white soldiers who arrived in a minimum of two helicopters in the middle of the night.
The helicopters provided air support to ground troops as they most likely dropped somewhere outside the town moments before carrying out the real raid.
The attack is said to have affected four positions of the militant Islamists inside and outside the town. This surely weakens the strength of the militants who no longer enjoy breathing space to carry out attacks against their targets.
Also, in the U.S drone attack on Saturday, five top Al Shabaab commanders were reportedly among the 150 fighters killed as confirmed by a Somali official.
The foreign commandos targeted three Al-Shabaab zones based at the outskirts of the town and also a base located inside the town.
Some reports say the foreigners caught some Al-Shabaab militants alive and even left with some dead bodies.
During the helicopter raid on a base of militant Islamist group Al-Shabaab close to the southern Somali town of Awdhegele, it is alleged that some militants tried to battle it out with the commandos who were in mask but were overpowered.
Al-Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab told Reuters news agency that the commandos covered their faces with masks and they spoke foreign languages that the militants could not comprehend.
Reuters quoted Sheikh as saying:
They were masked and spoke foreign languages which our fighters could not understand. We do not know who they were but we foiled them.
Meanwhile U.S troops said they had killed 150 militants in Al Shabaab’s camp in Somalia after a prolonged surveillance which showed the group had trained new fighters that were set to carry out a wide-reaching attack.
The Somali Islamist group al Shabaab on Tuesday confirmed through spokesman, Shiekh, that it is true that the United States had bombed an area it controlled but said the U.S. figure of more than 150 casualties was blown out of proportion.
The group claim they don’t ever allow up to one hundred fighters to gather at one point understanding that the sky is brimming with planes ready for constant bombardment against its members.
He however refused to give the casualty figure. But Abdiaziz Durow, commissioner of the nearby Buloburte district confirmed on Wednesday that five commanders and at least “140 newly trained fighters” were killed in the U.S raid.
Durow, who spoke on a local radio station, did not give names of the commanders but said the bombed camp continued to raise smoke till late hours of Tuesday.
