George W Bush

Former US President George W Bush has criticized the policies of the current US president in a rare interview given on Monday.

The former president, who was slated to talk about his newest book of paintings featuring the faces of wounded warriors called ‘Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors’, took some time to discuss President Donald Trump’s approach to immigration and the news media.

Trump has feuded with most media groups since taking office, calling negative news coverage about him “fake” or ”enemies of America”.

Bush took issue with the billionaire’s antics, telling NBC Today’s Matt Lauer that a free media was needed to check those in power.

“I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy. We need an independent media to hold people like me to account. Power can be very addictive. And it can be corrosive. And it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power, whether it be here or elsewhere.”

He added that he had spent time, while in office, trying to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to allow an independent media in his country.

“It’s kind of hard to tell others to have an independent, free press when we’re not willing to have one ourselves.”

In regards to Russia, Matt Lauer asked George W Bush whether any links between Trump aides and Russian officials during the presidential election campaign should be formally investigated.

Bush answered saying:

“I think we all need answers… I’m not sure the right avenue to take. I am sure, though, that that question needs to be answered.”

Mr. Bush was then asked about President Trump’s executive orders which attempted to temporarily ban immigrants and refugees from seven Muslim-majority nations.

He said he was for a welcoming immigration policy that upholds the law. He stressed that “people should be able to worship who they want to or not at all”, calling that the bedrock of America’s freedom.

George W Bush, however, added that the job is a tough job saying that the current Oval Office incumbent had been there for only one month.

”Everybody looks at the presidency one way and when they get into office, they find out there’s a reality to the job.”

Knowing President Trump, a reply to President George W Bush via twitter must be in the works to continue the frosty relationship between the Bush family and the former businessman.
