Public Works Principal Secretary Mariam El-Maawy has passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in South Africa.
The PS succumbed to injuries sustained after Al-Shabaab militants ambushed her convoy at Milihoi, Lamu County in July.
Al-Shabaab militants briefly abducted the Principal Secretary and her entourage at Milihoi along the Lamu-Mpeketoni highway as she was returning from a government function.
She was later rescued by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers about 45 minutes later. Four security officers, including Ms. El-Maawy’s driver, were killed in the operation.
The PS was later airlifted in a KDF helicopter to a hospital in Nairobi. She had a bullet lodged in her left shoulder and burns on her legs.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has condoled with Mariam El-Maawy’s family saying that he was “deeply distressed to learn that she passed away.
He called her “a dedicated public servant, an accomplished architect, and a patriot.”
Mr. Kenyatta went on to narrate her accomplishments right from childhood till the time which she established a successful practice.
He said her achievements, expertise, public spirit, and patriotism meant that it was a pleasure for him to invite her to join his administration, as Principal Secretary for Lands and later as Principal Secretary of Works.
President Kenyatta said she served with distinction in both offices, and her loss will certainly be felt. He added that all who had the honor of working with her will remember her warmth and her quiet, firm dedication to serving Kenyans to the very best of her ability.
The President prayed that Allah rests her soul in peace and that He comforts her family and all who knew and loved her, in this moment of sorrow and grief.
