Independent presidential candidate Solomon Gichira is calling for the postponement of the August 8 General Election with just 34 days to go.
Mr. Gichira cited foul-play by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission as the reason for his demand. He also asks for a caretaker government to be put in place when Uhuruto’s tenure expires next month to prepare for a proper election within two years.
The candidate who was arrested for trying to commit suicide at the electoral body’s offices said the agency has failed to ensure that the will of the people will be reflected on the ballot. He said he feels the country might be plunged into civil violence if IEBC is left to continue “acting unconstitutionally and in disregard of the law.”
According to Mr. Gichira who cited the 2010 constitution, Kenyans have a right to voter education which IEBC has not done. This is despite haven been allocated money in the budget to do so.
“Whereas the Constitution calls for continuous registration of voters, IEBC has disregarded the law and established its unconstitutional quasi-periodic mass voter registration drives in specific intervals leading up to elections with no possibility of registration outside of these MVR timelines,” said Solomon Gichira.
He has also faulted the electoral body of continuing with the process of printing of ballot papers, despite a case in court challenging the whole process.
NASA presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, earlier on alleged there is a plot by IEBC to print extra ballot papers to rig the election results. Catholic bishops have also weighed in on the matter and sent words of caution to the electoral body.
Mr. Gichira finally, called for the immediate resignation of the IEBC Chairman, CEO, Director of Voter Registration and Education and all current commissioners.
He says that Mr. Chebukati should be committed to civil jail for disregarding the law and failing his country.
